Why Women Should Weight Lift and Build Muscle

I obviously write from the male perspective and rely on female lifters to write for the women. But upon rolling out our phase 2 lifting plan it got me to thinking that as excited as I am to be able to offer up a way for people to take weight lifting to the next level, getting people to be interested in why and how to build muscle was my first priority. So I thought giving a male perspective to women on why to lift would be a good “back to basics” for me.

Women build muscle the same way men do, but generally not for the same reasons. The average guy would take a pro bodybuilders body in a heartbeat if he could. But not many average women want to look like pro women lifters (for those that DO want that physique our lifting phase 1 and 2 lifting plans are for YOU for sure!).

So ladies, of all ages, if you are considering becoming more fit, muscle building is the way to go and this is why….

Increasing your strength.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to handle groceries or luggage, lift your grandchild or daughter from the crib, or hold your arm over your head long enough to insert a light bulb? Everyday life is easier with strength. You don’t get strength from cardio or dieting. Strength comes from strength training. You don’t have to lift the most you can, but lift more than you think you can. By this I mean I see women more often than men using insufficient weight while training. Seriously, a 5 year old can curl 5 pound weights and my 13 year old niece can curl 10’s. Grab something that doesn’t feel heavy, but actually is heavy and use it when training.

Look Better.

Most females first thought about lifting at all and especially lifting really heavy weights is that they DON”T want to look like a pro female lifter so why lift that way. Agreed. First, women don't have the NATURAL testosterone levels needed to build mass like men. MOST females that add that kind of bulk supplement with steroids. Secondly, sticking to our Phase 1 and 2 plans is NOT how pros train. These plans are intended to give you better overall body mass and firmness. Better overall firmness means less flab, more muscle. How much muscle you add is totally depended on you. Lastly, do you know how long it takes to LOOK like those pro’s that you don’t want to look like? Many, many years. Unless you are TRYING to look that way, you won’t (and if you are trying, bless you). But who wouldn’t want to be firmer, stronger and fitter, than they currently are? The ONLY way to do all 3 is to strength train.

Improve Bone Density.

Women are prone to osteoporosis. Weight lifting increases bone density. If you want to be able to walk down the stairs without breaking your hip or arms in the future, then you need to lift weights to help prevent injuries in old age. It has been scientifically proven that you can increase muscle mass AND bone density at ANY age, in case you are over 40 already.

Weight Control.

For every pound of muscle you add your body burns 50 calories a day, just existing. Which means 5 pounds of new muscle equals 250 calories a day of “stuff”, with no weight gain, or, without adding that extra 250 calories, a one pound weight loss every 14 days without trying (once the 5 lbs of muscle are added). Weight lifting is the LONG TERM solution to weight control. By the way, sense muscle is denser than fat, 5 lbs of muscle takes up less than half the space of 5 lbs of fat. Your weight may be the same, but you are firmer and 2 (1, 3?) sizes smaller.

It’s Fun.

I see people walking for exercise all the time. Why? Well generally it’s more than 1 person and walking allows you to talk. Time goes faster and it doesn’t seem as much like “exercise”. Okay. You ever watch kids play? Do they have more fun when they are “walking” or when they are participating in activities that gets their heart rates up and adrenalin flowing? These are the type of activities that we were meant to do. Weight lifting does this. Wouldn’t it be nice to feel like a kid again? Oh, and you can talk between sets. I DO!
