To fully understand this look at professional bodybuilders. In his day Arnold was huge. Arnold back then would be a midget compared to Ronnie Coleman today. The average person would have looked at Arnold and said “how can anybody be any bigger and better?” Coleman proved you could.
So, of course, people today look at Coleman and repeat “how can anybody be any bigger and better?” But they can, and they will. Coleman himself improved dramatically from his first title through his last, 8 years later, and he was not a "young" man.
I point this out to illustrate that (A) muscle building is for everyone and (B) its’ limits on your own body are limitless.
So the question becomes where along this muscle building continuum are you? And then where do you want to be eventually?
I have laid out a “beginners” workout routine that focuses on 5 essential compound exercises. I have also given set and rep recommendations as well as pointed out that heavier weights are better and isolation moves and cardio are a general waste of energy towards building muscle mass at this stage. If you perform this routine, as
recommended, get the proper amount of rest and combine it with the correct nutritional intake you will add mass over a 30 day time frame, or at least I did.
So are you ready for phase 2? Ask yourself this question:
Did I sincerely put forth the effort to doing this routine as recommended?
If the answer is no, well, what did you expect? Muscle building isn’t done with “good intentions”. If you answered yes then ask yourself these questions?
Is my overall fitness level better? (check by either before and after photos or measurements)
Has my strength increased? (are you using heavier weights now than when you started?)
If the answer is no to either then my way doesn’t work for you, thanks for trying and there are no parting gifts. If the answer is yes (and for 99.9% it will be) you have one final question to ask yourself:
If it has worked for 30 days why should I change?
The answer is that maybe you shouldn’t!
This where it gets interesting. Remember the whole “muscle building continuum” thing? You are beginning to progress through it. You have left the world of “couch potato-dom” or even better the “why aren’t my workouts working-dom”, and entered the world of the “limitless physical condition”. So finally you get to ask yourself:
Where do I want to be eventually?
The answer to this question determines if you are a phase 2 lifter or not. Just because you answer with “bigger
and stronger” doesn’t necessarily mean you have actually advanced physically far enough to be phase 2. And if you are satisfied with the way things have progressed, and you are not sure if moving into a second phase is something you want to do now or ever, I can help with that thought process as well.
