Build Muscle with Muscle Building Supplements?

The age old question about whether or not supplements are necessary to build muscle continues to be a source of debate for some. Health oriented people have been saying that natural bodybuilding is the only way to go for long term health and safety. But they are called muscle building supplements or bodybuilding supplements, so they must build muscle or the body right?

I am a health oriented person and do believe whole heartedly that natural bodybuilding is the way to go. By natural what I am referring to is steroid free. HGH free. The hormones that the body produces naturally, most notably testosterone, should be left to the body. There is enough research out there to know that continued use of artificially raised levels of these substances has a negative impact on your health. But there is also no denying that they improve your ability to build muscle significantly. So to answer the question as to whether these supplements build muscle or not, yes, but at what cost?

The more debated kind of supplements, whey protein, and many other kinds of over the counter products, is another matter. The majority of these type supplements your body doesn’t produce. The main source for these is your diet. The food you eat. Do these products help you build muscle and are they safe to take? I look at it this way, where would I be if I didn’t eat? Healthy? Big and strong? Obviously not. Since the primary source for these supplements is in the food you eat, it seems natural to think that it would be okay to consume huge amounts if you wanted to. You can’t die from eating too much chicken can you? So if there is a way to get the protein without eating the chicken, so what. The research is overwhelming that protein in general, whey protein in particular, is safe and aids tremendously in building muscle.

As far as supplements like creatine, aminos and all the other exotic supplements the jury is out. I will say that a huge part of being successful at muscle building is to have your mind right. If taking supplements pre workout for energy boosts actually works or not, isn’t important. If you think it does than use them. I do.

So do supplements build muscle? No. Lifting large amounts of weight does. But the fuel to do this makes a difference. Supplement your diet with whey protein. Creatine won’t hurt. The rest is up to you.
