December 19, 2007  Steroids in Baseball

I find it hilarious the way most people are reacting to this “scandal”.  If you have ever spent more than 15 minutes in a gym, there is nothing about this that is surprising.  Any man over the age of 40 knows the things that Bonds and Clemens were doing, from a physical perspective, would be impossible without some kind of chemical help (and didn’t the over 40 Brett Farve just get named to the Pro Bowl, as the best quarterback in the NFC?  Isn’t football kind of hard on a guy this age?).  Not only are they playing at their age, they are excelling against men half their age.  There is no doubt that their ability in baseball is greater than the average Major League player.  That’s what has enabled them to be as great as they were and still are to an extent.  But the PHYSICAL ability, at their current age defies logic.  No man, given any skill advantage, should be able to not only beat, but dominate, in any way physically over men half their age (think boxing).  There comes a point where you cannot improve or remain equal to, what you were. But Bonds and Clemens were almost at their peak as they turned 40.  Whether you like/dislike agree/disagree with their use of steroids, and they did (and probably still do) use them, there is a very important fitness lesson to be learned here.  And it’s a good one.  For those of you who don’t know, you can’t take steroids and sit on the couch and get in great shape.  Or dominate in the Major Leagues.  You have to hit the gym.  Hard.  No matter what the truth is, these guys have shown what awesome potential lies within, regardless of age or current physical shape.  It doesn’t take steroids to be in the best shape you can be.  Just a desire to be and get in shape.
