My name is Steve Robbins and I'm the creator of this site. The first question visitors have is on what authority do I have to be giving fitness advice. Good question. Let’s answer it.
First I am not a professional when it comes to bodybuilding. Nor am I a professional in the field of medicine or nutrition. What I am is just like 99% of the people you see walking around everyday. What does separate me is that I can bench press twice my weight, throw on a pair of running shoes and run a marathon. Oh, and I just celebrated my 51st birthday. I do know what works and how to be fit. I live it everyday.
After leaving collage in 1980 I was 5’9’’ tall and weighed 149 lbs. I was athletic so being active physically came natural for me. But what I wanted most was to not be “small” and “unhealthy”. Hard to make yourself taller, so I opted for stronger. By the time I was 35 I was still 5’9’’ and weighed in at 161. Most of the 12 lb gain was around the waist. Yet I had knocked around gyms and had tried to “get big” all this time. And then it happened. A series of incidents at work left me with 2 herniated discs and a trip to the doctor. The advice given was surgery and 3 months recovery or 6 months traction, no physical activity during either method. I couldn’t do either. My job was physical and I had to make a living. So I lived with the pain. By the time I was 40 I had met and become good friends with a Physical Therapist who offered up a lifting program as a way to strengthen my lower back to help offset some of the constant pain. Jackpot!
By using his program, and modifying it to meet my desire to build muscle everywhere, I still stand only 5’9” (maybe even 5’8” now), but my weight is 190 with a 32 inch waist, 18 inch arms and a 49 inch chest. I can and do run marathons, though I hate cardio and am slowly giving it up. I haven’t been sick in 10 years and I am pain free in the low back.
What worked for me is spelled out on every page and in every article that you see on this site. Nothing magical. Stop pretending. Get your mind right. Low rep, high weight serious lifting. Whey protein, creatine and vitamins. Eat right. Have a routine bedtime and get your rest. Simple, yet seemingly difficult to do, clean healthy living. I am stronger, bigger and leaner at 51 than I was at 21, 31 and 41. Hopefully the things you read here can do the same for you.
